In my class, the year will be spent studying, researching, and discussing the history and development of the United States and North Carolina from early European Exploration until the mid-20th Century.  There will be a heavy emphasis on the 13 Original Colonies, life in Colonial America, the French and Indian War, the Revolutionary War, the Constitutional Convention, and the creation of the United States government.  We will also participate in a case study about the causes, events, and effects of the War Between the States and North Carolina's role from 1861 - 1865.

Class Rules
1.  Listen and Pay Attention.
2.  Do What You Are Told.

All students are expected to do their absolute best at all times.  Nothing less will be tolerated.  Exemplary classroom behavior and maturity are also expected.  If the rules are not followed, students will receive a clear, verbal warning from the teacher.  If the misbehavior continues, the student will then receive either a detention or an immediate office referral.  All students will be held responsible and accountable for their own actions and decisions.

Absentee Policy

Throughout the course of the year, there is a very good chance that your child will be absent from school for one reason or another.  It is the explicit responsibility of your 8th grade student to approach the teacher the next day and ask what work was missed, what needs to be turned in, and what assignments are currently due.

In an effort to enhance the 8th grade United States History and North Carolina curriculum for your child, I am in the process of updating the list of potential movies/videos that I had originally passed out to you at the beginning of the year.

Throughout the course of the year, it is necessary and beneficial for your child to be able to study and view movies and videos that are relevant to the Standard Course of Study and era of history that we are then studying at that particular time in class.  These will be shown for educational purposes only and not for entertainment or rewards.  A quiz or an exam will usually accompany each presentation.

Please note, however, that we will NOT watch every movie that is listed below.  This list is just a tentative list that, depending on the class, period of study, and time, we may or may not be watching.

Roanoke- (PG). A story about John White and the first European colony at Roanoke and their disappearance in 1587.
