The halls are alive with the sounds of music at A.C. Reynolds Middle School. As the holiday season approaches, many Buncombe County Schools are preparing for musical performances.

Seventh and eighth-grade students in Ms. Christine Cullen’s Chorus class have a special opportunity this year. The middle-schoolers will join the students of the A.C. Reynolds High School chorus program to make this show one to remember.

The students will sing “Silent Night,” but in German. Prior to learning the song, most of the students knew very little about the language. Not only has Ms. Cullen taught them how to sing beautifully, but she has dedicated a lot of time to learning a new language.

“They caught on faster than I could have imagined,” said Ms. Cullen. “I believe it’s because they enjoyed learning it. They are excited to work with the high school, and feel it is an opportunity to learn from them.”

A lot of time and thought goes into picking the music for each performance, as well as many hours of training and rehearsal. Ms. Cullen says performances like these demonstrate her passion for teaching.

“I love to learn and perform all styles of music, and I choose music that tells a story,” said Ms. Cullen. “Training singers to understand the dramatic interpretation of a piece enhances the quality of the sound, dynamics, and performance.”

Parents, staff, and community members are welcome to attend the show. The performance is set for 7 p.m. on December 16 at First Baptist Church in Asheville.
