McCollum, Amy (ELA - 8)

Welcome to my Classroom
Mrs. Amy McCollum

Hello future and present students, parents and all!!
I am excited to start each new school year with your child.  My goal is for each student to help them learn to challenge themselves and find success within each challenge they take on. I teach with a positive approach  and a genuine belief that there are no "bad readers", just students who have not found the words that inspire them.  There are no "bad writers", just students who have not found the passion for what they want to write about.  Therein lies my job. Opening up doorways, experiences, and opportunities for students to discover those books and passions.  Hopefully this will lead to a lifetime of inspired, internally guided learning.
In my free time my daughter and I enjoy all sorts of outdoor activities, including biking, boating, trail running and all team sports.  We have a huge passion for travel and experiencing other cultures. Hailing from Michigan, we are both strong U of M fans.  Although graduating from Marshall University, I also support The Thundering Herd football team.
I have been in North Carolina for the past 27 years as a teacher, as well as a local business owner. My teaching career began in Wilmington, NC, teaching kindergarten, followed by 4th grade.  After 7 years by the ocean and too many hurricane survival stories, I moved to the beautiful mountains of Asheville and started a photography business and international album manufacturing business.  After adopting my daughter I decided to return to my first passion in life....teaching.  I grew up in Michigan and West Virginia.  I graduated from Marshall University with a bachelors degree and Argosy University with my Masters degree.  This year I am going to work towards my National Board license.
