Justen, Melissa (Social Studies - 6)

I have taught with Buncombe County Schools for ten years predominately in sixth grade Social Studies, but have experience teaching Language Arts and Science as well. I completed my student teaching in Detroit, Michigan in an elementary school, but my heart lies in sixth grade which I've been teaching for my whole career.  I earned my bachelor's degree from Michigan State University in 2006 and my master's degree from Western Carolina University in 2012.
In my classroom, students don't just "do Social Studies."  Instead they experience history through the lens of historians and learn though cooperative group work, student-centered lessons, and reflective notebooking.
One of the most important parts of teaching middle school is the building of trust and respect.  Flexible seating, classroom jobs, clear expectations, and engaging lessons are the cornerstones to ensuring my students feel safe and can therefore learn.
I love teaching, learning, traveling, reading, cooking and baking, making craft projects, running, and yoga.  I am married with a small daughter and live in south Asheville.
